Reinvention with Maya

by Dana on May 17, 2012

For a while now I’ve admired Maya’s lovely blog and cool burlap bucket pattern. Her photos are like jumping into another world for me.
So when I heard she was writing a book, I secretly hoped the buckets would be included.  And sure enough, they are!….along with tons of other great repurposing projects.

The book is called Reinvention and it’s same flavor you get on her site.

Whenever I pick up a new sewing book I’m excited to see what makes it different and unique from the rest…new projects, unique photos, some sort of twist. And what I love about Reinvention is the way the projects are categorized. The chapters are according to fiber type, such as Burlap, Jersey Knit, Linen, etc.  So if you have a fabric you’d like to reinvent, just flip to that fiber section to find a project.

Maya starts with the sewing basics. then jumps right into the projects….like this darling skirt with attached apron (to go with our Knits conversation yesterday).

I’m totally digging these arithmetic pillows and pillow buddies (she also talks about ways to paint fabric).

Maya has sections on reinventing denim, burlap (check out the cool burlap bins below), and even ideas for using old postal envelopes.   Check out what Elsie Marley did with the mailer idea here.

And aside from all the cool projects in the book, the photos really capture Maya’s life and surroundings.  I adore this picture of her wrapped up in a quilt.  Such a different life from my own.  So it’s fun to jump inside her’s for a moment.

Reinvention is beautiful book to flip through with so many fun projects to tackle.
So.
Would you like to try it out?
Today we’re giving away one copy of the book.  Here you go….

Oh yes please! I’m teaching a class at school right now about using repurposed materials for building and we’re getting ready to gather our cast-off materials tomorrow. This is a little different than our planned trip for Monday to the local landfill, but it would be such a fun extension for me this summer! I’m in love with the denim rug already! Thanks for the giveaway!

I want to let you know how much I enjoy your blog. I find it difficult to find people in my town that are my age with the same interests. You and a couple other blogs have been very interesting for me – thanks for sharing your knowledge and ideas. I would love to add this book to my studio – great photographs!
