SYTYC Week 8: New Years, Parade Jackets, and Cousins

by Dana on January 11, 2010

The most popular thing in our town on Jan 1st is the Rose Parade. And in those early-morning hours, only your best Parade Jacket will keep you warm and happy while colorful floats roll by.
I’ve been wanting to make Lucy a new jacket for a while based on her old Costco jacket worn last year to the parade (with my youngest sister Meredith):
So this year, I decided to improve the look and (using the old jacket as my guideline) made an updated version in charcoal gray fleece:
For girly effect, there are little puffed sleeves (see our tutorial HERE):
And for a sneak-peek of fun, each collar is lined with trendy cotton prints:
Lucy’s 2 cousins were in town for the holidays, so I thought all the girls should have a jacket. Cause if you’re making one, you might as well make three! Right?
With the girls all dressed up, I started snapping photos and I couldn’t believe how photogenic they all were.
Jillian’s expressions are so vibrant. Not sure what she saw behind that door but we sure loved her excitement.

And Jacqueline, what a natural you are!
I didn’t offer any direction, she just struck her own poses.
I’m sorry we don’t live closer, cause you three sure are cute together.

To make your own jacket, use an existing jacket you have as your pattern. Turn it inside out and trace each jacket piece on to your new fabric. Then sew the new one back together in the same fashion as the old jacket. Of course, adding contrasting, chunky buttons definitely adds to the cute factor.

Thankfully Lucy was in love with her jacket update. She wore it anytime we went outside and even down to the beach….
….where we ate delicious fish and chips (and onion rings),
walked along the Ventura pier,

and rolled up our pants.
Gotta love Southern California in December.
So, it’s off with the old, and on with the new. Here’s to a great New Year and plenty of new ideas. Happy 2010!
There’s only ONE challenge left on SYTYC! Just me and Ashley (though we were both very sad to see Vanessa go. sniff). But….you’ll have to wait till next week to check out our Final Project. Because this week is an audition week! How fun does that sound? SYTYC is auditioning contestants for Session 2. So head over and VOTE for your favorite!

I so want to make one of these for my daughter! And maybe one for my son. I love the fleece jacket you made for Owen when he was the Mad Hatter and that would be perfect for my son. I think this should be your next pattern for your shop.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance. I must say that you’ve
done a very good job with this. In addition, the blog loads
very quick for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!
