Baby Basket

by Dana on February 24, 2009

Grandma has a fun tradition for the Grandgirls: on their 3rd birthday they get an American Girl Bitty Baby doll. I thought it would be cute to have a little bed/moses basket to go along with her doll. But I had a hard time finding anything online or in stores. Duh, just make one! It wasn’t hard to figure out the pattern but it was awkward trying to sew the bottom piece to the top, since I used two layers of batting and plastic canvas inside to make it sturdy (found near the yarn/crafts at JoAnns or Michaels):
I made my own bias tape this time with my new (cheap) tool. Why am I only now getting around to using this?! It’s a time saver. I cheated though and didn’t cut my fabric on the bias (diagonal). But it still turned out okay for all the edging (minus my crooked sewing job):
Two small pockets inside for bottles, pacifiers, and other baby needs:
A pillow and blanket to go along. One day I’ll make her a cute quilt. But for a midnight sewing project, this simple knit will have to do:
Bitty Baby fits perfectly! Now we just need to give her a name….and a little more attention.
My Goose has never been a real doll girl. And though it would melt her Grandma’s heart if she were, this may be a work in progress for our girl. Most of her friends are in the doll stage but she prefers to play with small figurines from her favorite shows instead. So, more often than not, this is what ends up happening in our house…..Little Brother gets all the play time he wants:
While she lines up her Einstein toys:
Whatever makes you happy little one. Happy Birthday! We love you!

Could you please email me the steps you used to make this and what supplies I would need?! I’ve been looking for a fabric moses basket tutorial everywhere and can only find wicker ones!

Do you sell the pattern? I would love to make one for my handicapped daughter who loves baby dolls :). Thank you for sharing your beautiful projects.

Do you think this could be adapted to use for an actual baby? For when they are a newborn? Do you have a pattern? Thanks so much
